Sazerac

Layers of flavours are revealed as you sip the classic Sazerac. The warmth and glow of the rye effuses flavours of spice and honey, while the bite of the bitters is balanced by the sweetness of sugar. Subtle anise and the perfume of lemon oil is a real treat.

About this cocktail

The Sazerac was created in 1832 by Antoine Amadie Peychaud, a Creole Apothecary who set up the Sazerac Coffe House in the French Quarter of New Orleans in the early 19th Century.

Rumoured to be the first use of the word cocktail and oldest cocktail in America, Peychaud named his concoction the ‘Sazerac Cocktail’ and served his medicinal tincture in a double ended egg cup thought to inspire the jigger we use in bartending today.

Now a gun store, the apothecary also dispensed a proprietary mix of aromatic bitters from an old family recipe, which is sold today as Peychaud bitters.

Ingredients

Rye whiskey, sugar, angostura bitters, Peychauds bitters, lemon peel and absinthe

ABV 32%

Directions

Refrigerate first and/or use the stirred method to chill. To serve, rinse a tumbler with absinthe from vile, then discard. Pour Sazerac into tumbler and garnish with a lemon zest.
